A beautiful series about two boys on a quest. Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse Elric tried to bring their dead mother back to life through alchemy, but things went terribly wrong. Ed wound up losing an arm and a leg while Al lost his entire body. Ed used alchemy to put his brother's soul into a suit of armor, and then he received an automail leg and arm. Now the brothers are determined to find the Philosopher's Stone, a stone that is said to increase an alchemist's power, to return their bodies back to normal.

Growing up is definitely one of the major themes, along with the difference between life and death. Edward tries to take full responsibility for their condition and becomes a "dog of the military" to try and set things right, but he's still a young boy inside and he finds that he can't accomplish it all alone. He and Al are both faced with tough decisions and near-death situations. All their life they believed in the principle of equivelant exchange, but now they are slowly realizing that most things in life aren't fair and don't follow this principle.

I absolutely adore this series. There is humor in just about every episode, but then tragedy is almost always following closely behind. One can get so wrapped up in the characters and their dillemas that it can seem real. You will learn that not all is as it seems, and this show can have you crying out at the injustices of the world as well as laughing at Edward's antics.

Forbidden alchemy, conspiracies in the military, a boy who hates milk... What more could you want in an anime?
