D.N. Angel is a beautiful series, not only in art, but also in story. It starts out as humor sprinkled with heart ache. Daisuke Niwa, a normal, 14-year-old boy, is rejected by his love, Risa. Later that day, when thinking about her, he suddenly turns into the legendary Phantom Thief Dark. He asks his mom and grandpa what the heck is going on, and they reveal that all Niwa family males turn into Dark on their 14th birthday. They tell him to go steal a famous sculpture and whisk him out the door.

Though things start out light-hearted enough, everything soon becomes serious as love and secrets come into play. There is a very complex love... shape involving 3 Harada females (only 2, I believe, if you read the manga), Daisuke, Dark, and a few others who pop in. Also, Satoshi Hiwatari, a school mate of Daisuke's, reveals that Dark's evil other half, Krad, lives inside of him.

One of the things that appeals to me most about the series is that nearly every episode has a different, usually tragic story to it. A little girl has waited over 40 years for her love to return, and another little girl is very lonely. A young woman falls in love with a man who cannot be with her, and With, Daisuke's pet rabbit-like creature, gets his share of heartache. Not even Daisuke's own mother is exempt from tragedy.

This series has made me laugh, and it has made me cry. It will do the same for you if you give it a chance.

Episode 1 - Dark Revived

The introductory episode, complete with fighting angels in the beginning. After a scene of Dark and a mysterious light angel, it cuts to Daisuke Niwa, a boy who's turning 14. He has a plan to give Risa Harada a love note, but before he can, she tells him that he's like her best friend. Heartbroken, he finishes school in a daze, then is forced to go clean up the art room. He gets there but has the wrong keycard, so he has to hack into the computer lock to get in. Satoshi Hiwatari, a school mate, sees this but says nothing. They clean up, then Daisuke rushes home.

In his room, Daisuke looks at a picture he painted of Risa and thinks about her words. He starts to feel weird, and he transforms into the legendary Phantom Thief Dark! He asks his mom and his grandpa, and they explain that all males of the Niwa family turn into Dark on their 14th birthday whenever they think of the girl they love. They then tell him that he has to steal a statue; when he protests, they say that once he obtains the "Sacred Maiden" (the name of the statue he has to steal), he'll return to normal. They then whisk him out the door to go be the great crook they always hoped he would be.

The news crew comes and catches Dark flying high above the art museum on camera. Highschool girls everywhere squeal in delight as they catch a glance of this great looking thief, including Risa Harada. She instantly becomes totally infatuated with Dark and is determined to get him, even though her chances are pretty much the same as anyone else's.

Daisuke-as-Dark gets inside the museum and easily slips past the police, but just as he's about to steal the statue, Satoshi comes in and pins him to the ground. Daisuke silently calls for help, and Dark takes control. He manages to get away through trickery, then flies out the window.

As Dark is making his escape, he catches sight of Risa standing on the balcony. He starts to think of someone who looks a lot like her, and he feels like he's about to transform back into Daisuke. Riku, Risa's twin sister with shorter hair, comes out, and Risa goes back inside to take her bath. Just then, Phantom Dark lands on the balcony. He tries to calm Riku down, but it doesn't work, so he ends up kissing her to shut her up.
